1) 10833 - A good
quality 8 day oak long case clock by John Payne of Lenham, Kent. c1790. This
clock stands 7ft 9" high with its original brass ball and spire finials.
The movement is of good quality being in the London style with 5 supporting
pillars, the early white 12" dial by Osborn has a good quality painting to
the arch with gold spandrels, the dial also shows seconds and has a subsidiary
calendar dial. The substantial oak case has a pagoda hood top and brass capped
columns, long trunk door and original feet.
John Payne was born in 1731 and is recorded as being a watch and clock maker,
mentioned in Kent Clockmakers by Michael Pearson that all surviving clocks are
of good quality. Also listed in Baillies and Brittens Clock and Watchmakers of
the World. He died in 1795. There are two other Paynes recorded working in
Sevenoaks and Lenham at the end of the 18th century. Both making quality London
clocks of similar style and are most likely all related.
